Books I’ve read recently

Sliding Into HomeSliding Into Home by Kendra Wilkinson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kendra’s memoir is the best I have read ever. She writes straight from her heart. It’s almost like sitting down with an old friend and hearing all her dirty little secrets. She leaves nothing to the imagination spilling pretty much everything you’ve probably wondered about in regards to the Playboy mansion and Hugh Hefner. My only complaint would be it seemed she wrote more fine details about her life early on, like teen years and such…but once she got to the more recent years, like after she met Hank- I felt some of the chapters were rushed. I wanted to know more details about their dating and when she found out she was pregnant, stuff like that. Overall though, great entertaining book!

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella by Stephenie Meyer

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not really worth reading unless you are bored and have nothing else to read. I am obsessed with the Twilight series, but I can’t say I took away too much from this book. Save your money and pick something else.

The HelpThe Help by Kathryn Stockett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I seen this book on the top sellers list so many times and I never wanted to read it. I was judging the book by the cover and the title, both which do not do this book justice in my opinion. Also, I had read a blurb about the book being set back in the 1960’s and I just don’t enjoy books set back in time. I instantly think that it is going to be like history class and I hated history class!
I finally decided to give it a try and I was hooked immediately. It is about black maids working for white families back before the Civil Rights movement. Several different maids share their stories of abuse and mistreatment that they have gone through with their various employers. I laughed and cried and really really enjoyed this book.

Uncharted TerriTORIUncharted TerriTORI by Tori Spelling

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Sadly I have to say that this book was the worst out of all 3 of Tori Spelling’s memoirs. After reading her other books and watching her reality show there wasn’t much in this book that I didn’t already know. I did enjoy the chapter written about how she made amends with her mother..that was touching.
I had bookmarked a page in her book (on my iPad- love the bookmark feature!)about her visit to a Reiki practitioner who helped her deal with her fear of flying among other things. I could relate to what she was told so much that I found myself in tears and thinking- That’s me! That’s me! Tori wrote about how she fears so many things in life, the whole “what if” problem. I have always been this way…so bad that I can not truly imagine what my life will be like 10 years from now. Like I can’t picture it in my mind at all. It causes me to think all kinds of crazy things like does that mean I won’t be here in 10 years? I probably shouldn’t give away what she was told by the practitioner, but it was a light bulb moment for me because what she said is so true! And in result, one of these days I need to write out my “happy ending”.
(sorry, didn’t mean for the review to turn into a therapy session!)

Heart of the MatterHeart of the Matter by Emily Giffin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first book I have read of Emily Giffin’s and it did not disappoint. The great storyline and characters told a story of two different women and how their lives cross due to a tragic accident. The book flips back and forth from one woman’s point of view to the other, I loved that it was written that way. One of those books that make you think…what would you do?
I just might have check out some of Emily’s other books now.

Celebrating 50 years at our church

Not much to write about today…just enjoying the second half of summer vacation. It’s hard to believe that it’s half over huh? Our kids don’t go back to school until the Tuesday after Labor Day so we have lots of time yet. I plan on enjoying these few relaxing weeks before we get super busy with football season. Enjoy today’s video!

DIY Football Drills

It’s 11pm and I just finished watching The Bachelorette. My mom had stopped over with my grandma for a visit. Anyways, I get so angry at this show. They build it up week after week for a finale that is going to be such a let down. I won’t go into any details, but I am not happy about how the show apparently ends. Why do I let myself get so emotionally invested in these shows?

More importantly, why do I wash the sheets on our bed and wait until bedtime to put them back on? I HATE WHEN I DO THAT!!!

Here is a short vlog for ya… The boys WANTED to get prepared for football season. Awesome!

Blake’s 10th

The family is watching Wipeout so I thought it was a good time to blog. I hate this show so I am trying my best not to laugh at some of these morons.

Andrew finishes Segment One of drivers Ed tomorrow. He still has 4 more driving sessions, but he does have his pink parent slip which allows him to drive with a parent. Ken is having issues with the ignition on his Buick Regal, the car that will be given to Andrew and we haven’t made it a priority to get fixed yet. So yesterday I let Andrew drive my Yukon to pick up his friend and drive to the school for football workout. Holy sweaty palms, actually sweaty entire body! I was so nervous. Ken is a freak about his Camaro and won’t let Andrew drive it, which makes no sense considering it’s value is half as much. Oh well, I figure he needs to learn to drive more than just one car. One thing for sure is he is no where near ready for busy roads. He drives fine, but he focuses solely on what he is doing and doesn’t watch his surroundings enough. Maybe that is how it is when you first learn?

We’ve been having fun with our Thursday playdates with 3 other families in our neighborhood. We rotate whose house it will be at each week. The kids have a blast and I enjoy the adult conversation. Today I realized that summer vacation is only half over! Our kids don’t go back until the Tuesday after Labor Day. God help us, LOL! Just kidding. The kids have been fine, they only get on my nerves a few dozen times a day. The worst part is just getting them to go outside. They last all of 20 minutes and then they come back in whining that it’s hot. Then I have to drag Andrew outside to watch them while they swim. I’m not complaining though, I love that we are able to be here with them everyday. Can you believe this next school year all the kids will be in school all day?

My plans for posting videos isn’t going as well as I had hoped. Many times throughout the day things will happen with the kids that I think to myself- Darn, I should have been recording! That was funny! But I am working, or cleaning, or floating on a raft. Not to mention that anytime I would sit down to work on videos I had issues with my laptop. Windows Movie Maker would lock up or uploading to Youtube would fail. BUT, I have found a solution – I am now uploading my videos to our Mac instead and iMovie is so much better to work with. Hope you enjoy some snippets of Blake’s birthday…

Slow down summer!

Summer is flying by so fast and I blame my fabulous iPad for lack of posting. Between playing my favorite games and reading I rarely get on my laptop anymore unless I am working. We’ve had a lot going on here lately. Blake had his 10th birthday party last weekend which involved many of his friends and family. Then there were the 4th of July festivities. My niece Emma was also in town this last week and we spent as much time with her as we could. Andrew has had drivers ed every morning and football workouts at night. He actually gets his “pink parent slip” tomorrow, which I is like his temporary license. He then has to record 50 driving hours of practice with us over the next 6 months before he can take segment 2 of drivers ed.

We spent one day last week up at our neighbors campground on the lake. The kids had a blast tubing and riding jet skis. Actually Ken and I had just as much fun, if not more. Ken immediately starting talking about us getting a camper, which also means needing a boat and jet skis of our own as well. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds wonderful, but we rarely have entire weekends with nothing to do. Here it is the second weekend in July and we finally finished up baseball. Also to be honest I just don’t like being in dirty water as much as floating around in my clean pool in my backyard. You should have seen me freaking out about having to walk in the mushy lake. Then I cut my toe on something and all I could think of was GERMS GERMS!! The comedy that went on when Ken was trying to get on to the back of the wave runner with me was hilarious. I would get on and he kept tipping it over when he would try to get on. There was lots of laughing and screaming going on, mostly by me. Also I am thinking that investing money into all things “campground” would take away other non related items such as “Mexico”, “Barbados”, “Tahiti”…just to name a few. Never say never though right!

I have many videos to upload and share this week!

Cedar Point

We decided to take a day off work Tuesday and we took the kids to Cedar Point. The last time we went we only took Andrew and his friend, but now Blake is tall enough to ride all of the roller coasters. He rode several roller coasters with Ken, Andrew, and his buddy while I went around with Chase and Karli and enjoyed some of the kiddie rides.

It was a perfect day, low 70’s and not crowded at all. We got on all rides really quickly including the roller coasters! Anyone who knows Chase won’t be surprised to hear that he wanted to ride everything, including Top Thrill Dragster which I included in my video below for those who aren’t familiar with CP, but unfortunately he wasn’t tall enough. (Just a video of the ride, Chase was not on it! – at the 1 minute 20 second mark) He was able to go on Disaster Transport and Iron Dragon which he absolutely loved. Blake on the other hand was pretty nervous about riding the big roller coasters for the first time.

Going to Cedar Point always brings back memories from my childhood like how my sister used to scream her head off and whenever we got to the top of a hill she used to try to stand up and say she was getting off the ride. I also remember the one year that my sister had smashed my finger in her bedroom door the night before we went to Cedar Point. She slammed her door so hard that my finger nail fell off and all day at Cedar Point my entire hand throbbed and I could only hold on with one hand on all the rides. Lastly I remember going with the 6th grade crossing guards and I was playing skeeball and won this big huge stuffed parrot. I actually cheated to win the game by somehow pulling the ball release lever back only half way so it flipped the score numbers to a higher score than I actually had. I named the bird Cheater! The bad news was that night when I came home I found out my mom and sister got into a bad car accident. That was when I decided that whenever you do bad things…bad things happen to you. I still believe this to be true!
