Don’t call me when you need a plumber

It never fails whenever I attempt a project around the house something always go wrong. The kids bathroom needed painted…remember it was on my list? While I was preparing the bathroom for painting I had the brainy idea of fixing their faucet. A couple of months ago Ken had to replace the seal on one of the knobs because water kept leaking. When he put the faucet back together he put the knobs on the wrong way and you had to turn the handle the opposite way to turn the water on and off. It drove me crazy and I rarely even used the faucet in that bathroom. So you know where this is going right…plumbing and me do not mix. Just ask Ken how many times I have clogged up the garbage disposal and have tried to fix it myself.

I’m pretty familiar with how to take the handles off the faucet after all I do clean the inside of them every year or so. What? Don’t tell me you do yours more often than that. After I got the handles off I used this set of pliers that came with my “girl” tool set that I have had since my “single mom” years. See house repairs and I go way back, oh the stories I could tell. As I slowly loosened the nut around the faucet it suddenly popped off and water was spraying around the bathroom like a geyser. I’m not sure exactly what it looked like because I had to close my eyes it was spraying that hard. Luckily I knew where and how to turn the water off pretty quickly under the vanity. WHY I didn’t turn it off BEFORE I started playing around with the faucet is still a great question. The answer is honestly I didn’t know you had to. My explanation would be I didn’t think water came up to the faucet, you know wherever it comes from, UNTIL you turned the faucet on. How was I supposed to know that water is sitting there just waiting for you to turn the knob so it could come out? This is why I should not being doing anything with plumbing.

Cleaning up the mess wasn’t too bad. Karli and Chase had heard the loud pop and came running and I had told them to grab every towel they could find. They each grabbed about 5 towels each and we had it sopped up in no time. This included the water all over the ceiling as well. That was quite the experience.

I also can’t leave out the other brilliant idea I had in Blake and Chase’s bedroom. I wanted to install some new shelves because their trophies and memorabilia were no longer fitting on the two small shelves they currently had. Those shelves needed to be moved to another spot and I had some larger shelves laying around that I was going to use. After I got everything ready I had Ken patch all of my holes with whatever that dry wall goop is called. I let is dry and then I touched up all the spots with light blue paint. I figured while I was on a roll I would go ahead and touch up all the spots on their wall that needed touched up. I’ve have done this for years in all the rooms in our house. The light blue paint dried perfectly fine. As for the darker blue, not so much. It looks terrible!! So terrible I am going to have to paint the entire room. I guess the paint is no longer any good or maybe the paint on their walls faded. Who knows. Thankfully the dark blue color is only on half of their room. I’m so frustrated because the plan is probably next summer when Andrew goes away to college to paint the entire bedroom a different color because Chase will be moving into Andrew’s room and and all the bedrooms will be getting new carpet. Did I mention how much I despise painting?

Not good :(

At least their bedroom looks nice and organized now. I even installed one of Ken’s bulletin boards that he doesn’t use above Chase’s bed because he is always taping things to the wall. I hung those two plaques like that for a reason. One if a Dan Marino football card and the other is a wrestling award. I told Chase I am making room for more wrestling awards that he will be getting this year. Hint hint…and he liked that idea.

Lesson learned: Turn off the water underneath before messing with plumbing. Or even better, leave the plumbing to Ken.

Don’t even ask about electrical. One time I thought I could switch the dimmer switch in our bathroom from above our sinks to the light above our garden tub. I’ve seen the inside of a light switch before…just a couple of wires to connect. How hard could it be right? Well I screwed it up so much Ken couldn’t even fix it we had to have a friend who is an electrician come fix it. Hey at least I am independent and don’t make long Honey Do Lists for Ken all the time. However I think I create even more work for him the way I mess things up!

Cookie decorating… I did it!

Sharing my first attempt at making my own cookie dough and frosting from scratch…and sharing the recipes with you!

Back in October I had written a short list of things that I had on my TO DO list. How ironic is it that while so many are writing about their goals for 2013, I am going to write about the things that I have accomplished. YES! See that is the thing- you should always continue to make goals, you should always be thinking of ways to better yourself. The part that so many people forget to take the time for is acknowledging the goals that you have accomplished. Am I right?

So I’m going to toot my own horn hear and say that I actually made some pretty darn good cookies this year. As I mentioned in the other post, I had purchased a bunch of supplies to make these cookies before Halloween and for whatever reason I never got around to making them. The guilt set in and the weekend before Christmas I decided it was time to see if I could make these fancy pants cookies that I have seen so many others make. I wanted the perfect looking frosted ones, not the ones where you just use a butter knife to smear frosting all over the cookie.

I set up my laptop to watch listen to Gossip Girl and gathered all the supplies. I was most excited about being able to use my KitchenAid mixer. Don’t tell me that you don’t think playing with kitchen appliances is fun, you know it is!

Attempting to make sugar cookies and frosting from scratch.

The dough I made smelled so good. I’ve made dough from scratch before, but I can’t recall whether or not the recipe called for almond extract. I don’t think I will ever try another sugar cookie recipe again, this one was absolutely perfect. The perfect combination of sexy and cute. Whhhhaaa? That is just a line from Crazy, Stupid, Love, one of my favorite movies that I just finished watching. I’ve only seen it about 6 times!

The dough recipe that I used is from Bake at 360. The site is full of information. They have tons of video tutorials as well. I tried a couple of the methods for rolling out the dough and I ended up doing a mixture of them all. I taped a long sheet of wax paper to my countertop and I used 1/4 inch wooden rods that I also taped down to use as a guide because I can’t roll out dough very evenly without a guide. I used wax paper on top of the dough for awhile, but ended up just using flour on top of the dough instead. I also laid parchment paper down on my cookie sheets as the videos on the website recommend, which is something I have never done before. I just left the parchment paper on the cookie sheet and used the same one over and over again.

I had doubled the recipe and it made 7 dozen cookies. The cutouts I used were on the smaller side. Bake at 350 suggests freezing your cutout cookies on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes before baking and I did not do this. As for baking time the recipe suggests 10-12 minutes and I used the entire 12 minutes which was surprising because my oven usually takes less time than stated on most recipes. I would test it out a bit to see what works best for you.

That took a little longer than expected. 7 dozen ready to be frosted tomorrow ;)

I ended up cutting out and baking all the cookies and decorating them the next day. I knew it would take me awhile to make the frosting and mix the colors and such since it was my first time making frosting from scratch. I also LOVED this frosting recipe, which I also found at Bake at 350. I doubled this recipe as well and had more than enough and made several different colors. Make sure if you use this frosting recipe you do keep your containers covered with saran wrap as the frosting will dry up pretty quickly.

FLOODING!!! I was most excited about trying the outlining and flooding methods used to make these fabulous cookies! When you do these methods you have to thin out your frosting to put it in a squeeze bottle to flood the cookies. This calls for a bit of planning until you are comfortable with predicting how much of each color to set aside for outlining and how much for flooding. I ended up doing all my outlining first and then flooding last. I had my entire island countertop covered in cookies and frosting. It took me several hours to decorate all of the cookies, but I was so proud of myself at how well they turned out. As you can see I did used some sparkly sprinkles as well. So fun! Be sure to check out the Bake at 350 website for all of their awesome tutorials and cookie decorating ideas. Let me know if you have any questions on how I made these cookies. Also let me know of any websites that you use for cookie decorating.

These photos don’t quite show the details of the outlining and flooding like I wish they would. Again, I need to start using my Canon camera. I definitely don’t have the most steady hands and I loved how your lines didn’t have to be perfect to create a nicely decorated cookie. Not to shabby for my first time, right?

Not too bad for my first time making cookies this way!

More cookies...

And some more...

Can't forget the gingerbread men and one gingerbread lady!

I seriously can not wait for the next holiday to make more cookies. Probably Valentine’s Day!

Our Christmas

US!

I try not to live with regrets, but I really regret one thing this Christmas- taking photos with my darn iPhone. Normally under the right amount of light the camera takes excellent photos. But this year the results were really disappointing. They are just photos, but the years are going by so fast anymore. It’s time to start using my Canon Rebel SLR. Speaking of, I was thinking of investing in the latest model – anyone have any feedback they would like to share? The one I have is 12 years old, that sounds crazy!! I remember that Ken bought it for me the Mothers Day before we built our home. I was thinking of just buying the latest Digital Rebel body since I already have two lenses to go with it. I do have a small Canon Powershot SX120, but it takes real batteries that die so fast it’s annoying. I used it on vacation most of the time and I had to make sure I had backup batteries with me everywhere I went.

Anyways, so how was your Christmas? Typically I get pretty grumpy right before Christmas only because I get so stressed out over what to buy everyone. This year everything went pretty smoothly and I got my shopping done early and without much stress. The kids were easy to buy for this year and I actually had fun buying for everyone else. I came up with some good ideas for Ken as well which isn’t usually that easy either. Ken bought me some Ugg boots and gift certificate for a cleaning service. (Yikes, I need to clean this place up first! haha!) He also got me a blanket to replace the blanket that I lost at the airport when we were on the way back from Mexico. I have this thing where I like to cover my face when I’m sleeping, particularly if I am going to be sleeping with strangers nearby on an airplane, which is why I brought it on vacation. I had let Karli use it to cover up because she wasn’t feeling well and I ended up losing it somehow. Once I realized it was missing we were already boarded on the airplane. Ken had called to try and find it, but had no luck. The new one he bought me was a Baby Morgan blanket, look them up- crazy expensive! I can tell you that the blanket I had, that I am embarrassed to say was Andrew’s when he was a baby, was most likely a Kmart special or something!

It really was a great Christmas, the kids were happy and here it is New Years Eve and everyone is certainly ready to get back into the routine of work and school again. I’m bored of being lazy- how crazy does that sound? Don’t get me wrong, I thankful that I didn’t have to work at all over break, but I’m ready to get back into the swing of things. I hope your Christmas and break has been an enjoyable time for you!

Cancun – Days 6 & 7

Our last two days in Cancun were spent hanging out at the hotel and relaxing (my favorite part!). Day six was Chase’s 10th birthday and that evening we celebrated his birthday at Senor Frogs. After enjoying a yummy dinner the staff came out and sang Happy Birthday to Chase and smashed some ice cream in his face. Chase was laughing so hard, it was hilarious!

These aren’t the clearest because they are photos of photos, but the boys had their picture taken with some creatures around our pool.

Cancun – Days 3 to 5

Well I certainly didn’t think it would take me 10 days to get back to posting more vacation photos. Life has been crazy between work and getting ready for Christmas. All of my shopping is done and there are only a few more gifts coming via UPS that will need to be wrapped.

So, back to our vacation photos. If you missed day one and two- check those out here. Also, I added them to the same photo album as the others so you can view that photo album here. Again, there are photos in the album that are not included in this blog post.

Day Three of our vacation was spent getting up at 6am and heading off on our private tour to Ek’ Balam ruins, Chichen Itza, and the Cenote Ik Kil. I will spare you all the photos of the rocks. LOL, I laugh because I wasn’t overly interested in driving two and a half hours to look at ancient ruins. It’s just not my cup of tea. I would rather be soaking up the sun by the pool. But we all agreed that we would do activities 3 of the days and 3 of the days hang out and relax.

Ek’ Balam was cool because they allowed you to climb the ruins.

The Ik Kil cenote was beautiful but the water was so cold! It was very clear and you could see all the fish swimming around you and okay, I have to admit, I just really don’t like that. We have a bunch of photos from the boys and Ken jumping off the cliff into the water with a waterproof camera, but I haven’t gotten those developed yet. If you don’t know what a cenote is: It’s a deep natural pit, or sinkhole, characteristic of Mexico, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula, and some nearby Caribbean islands, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. (Thank you Wikipedia)

The kids favorite part of the day by far was our driver Javier. We had decided to pay a little extra for our own driver rather than go on a bus tour where we have to stop at a dozen other hotels. We wanted to be able leave each place when we wanted and truthfully just not deal with other people, haha! Javier was so friendly and did a great job explaining much of Mexico to us. If we were on a group tour we never would have had the conversations and learned the things we did that day.

Day 4 was Thanksgiving Day and while they don’t celebrate this in Mexico they had some real turkeys. Karli was upset later on in the day when one was laying down and she was worried where it went. Before she seen that it was laying down I told her they cooked it up and she was shocked! I truthfully don’t think my kids understand where food comes from sometimes. We spent the day at the pool and then we went out for dinner to a really nice restaurant Harry’s Grill. We asked our hotel to recommend a steak and seafood restaurant and made reservations. It was much more expensive than we thought it was going to be, but the food was very good.

On day five we went swimming with the dolphins at another resort. It was such an amazing experience! The dolphins feel so soft, kind of like wet leather. They charge a ton extra for photos and video that they try to sell you afterward, but we didn’t even go look at the photos. I read online that it is like $35 a photo and three times that much for the video. Karli and I went first and then the boys went after us so we could try to take photos and video of one another. They aren’t the greatest because the angle and distance was bad (on purpose I am sure).

Video of our experience here.

That night we ate dinner at the hotel and then we went to see this show at our hotel of Michael Jackson. It was pretty entertaining, kind of funny though because it was all lip syncing and I swear the dude did not know all the words!

The fifth day was another totally relaxing day. By this time I think I was on my third book already. I had the best time ever just laying by the pool and reading. The kids were able to get food as they pleased, such as Karli and Chase getting ice cream about 4 times a day. The hotel had an entertainment crew that had things going on around the pool throughout the day such as trivia, zumba, and bingo.

Cancun Vacation – Day 1 & 2

Over Thanksgiving we took a 8 day family vacation to Cancun, Mexico. We took about 400 photos, but don’t worry I won’t be posting them all. I do have a photo gallery that will include all of the photos, including ones that I won’t have in my blog posts. You can find that photo gallery for this blog post here.

We left for our trip the Monday before Thanksgiving and the kids were so sad to have to miss a few days of school. Okay, not really, but I sure regretted it when we got home. Blake and Andrew had a lot of work to catch up on as well as trimester exams the week we returned. Our flight was direct from Detroit to Cancun and left at 12:30pm so we didn’t have to be to the airport until 9:30am, which was nice.

And across the aisle sat the non-motion sickness prone…

The flight was about 3.5 hours long and went pretty smoothly for the most part. I read Bared to You so the time flew by. I started using my FlipCam on the airplane and thought I was going to make this awesome vlog when we got back from vacation. However I have to admit my kids are not the Shaytards. They don’t like being videotaped and they definitely don’t “put on a show” that makes them full of entertainment. If anything they shut down when I start recording. Oh well, at least I can take photos and you can’t hear them objecting!

After arriving at the airport we got through customs pretty easily, changed into some shorts, and went to look for our scheduled transportation to our resort. I have to laugh and share how Ken allowed himself to be stopped by the time-share schemers at the airport. He was convinced they were there to help us, but I knew from all my review reading that they were there specifically to talk you into booking excursions from them or attending their time-share meetings. Even when they did pretend to tell us where to catch our van to our resort they gave us the wrong information. Finally I got Ken away from the guy and we found our van. It was about a 20 minute drive to our resort, the Crown Paradise Club.

The infinity pool at our resort was pretty sweet. (notice the clouds, the weather was cloudy the first two days.)

The room itself, not so much. I didn’t like the family suite at all. When you walked in the door you either went up the stairs to our room, or down the stairs to the kids room. We each had our own separate bathrooms, but the kids only had a shower and if you had the curtain even slightly out of place the floor would flood. I thought our floor had a balcony, but it didn’t. The kids had doors that walked right out to grass and a patio, but birds crapped all over everything so you couldn’t really sit out there. Not that you would want to because the view was the worst. You could see the ocean in the far distance, but right in front of you was the kids play area- the waterslides, the soccer field, zip line, etc. One might think, how awesome, there is so much for the kids to do right outside your room, but our kids did not use the amenities at all! Chase and Karli went to the kids club once for like an hour and they hated it so they never went back. I don’t know why they didn’t want to participate in any of the other activities. They just liked to hang with us all the time I guess. I’m not complaining though- they never got bored just hanging out by the pool and eating endless snacks, especially ice cream. The resort was all inclusive so they were able to eat whatever they want at no extra cost. More than anything Chase and Karli enjoyed painting these ceramics and they ended up doing this activity three different days!

Don’t think for a minute we didn’t enjoy our trip, we had a fabulous time. I just wanted to give an honest review of the resort. I wouldn’t go back there or recommend it to anyone. It was not very clean, the food was mostly cold and very bland, and the hotel staff were not very helpful- you had to figure out most things on your own. That is the last time you will read a complaint though- the kids loved the vacation and it’s not like you spend that much time in your hotel room.

The kids loved hanging out at the beach and we spent time there every day. There were parts of the beach that had a high cliff that they loved playing on. Or there were other parts where you could walk right into the ocean. It was perfect. The first two days were really cloudy and we actually got nervous about the weather, but after the third day the weather was in the low 80’s and beautiful bright sunshine every day.

First day was pretty cloudy

First forced photograph of the kids

The second night we took a bus about 15 minutes from our hotel to do some shopping at La Isla Mall. We ended up having dinner at Baby Lobster only because when we were walking by the waiter told Ken to stop here for dinner and if we don’t love it- it’s free. The food was great and the kids loved our waiter Andy even more. Karli had asked for cheese for her French fries and since they didn’t have any our waiter went somewhere (another restaurant there maybe?) to get some.

We walked around the mall and took tons of crazy photos. There are all these guys dressed up in different characters that you can get your photo taken with. As you can tell if you look at all the photos – Chase loved get his picture taken more than anyone else. Don’t forget you can see many more photos from our first two days here.

Windows 8 is great

Windows 8

After using Windows 8 for about a week I have to say I really like it. It takes some time getting used to the start screen because it is unlike any previous version of Windows. It’s a very modern take of a start screen with all these brightly colored tiles. The new start screen is obviously geared towards users that will be using a touch-screen tablet or an ultrabook which is a laptop that converts to a tablet. It’s a little strange not having a start button that has been there since I can ever remembering using a computer. You can hover in the lower left corner and a start button will appear, but it takes you to the Live Tiles screen, not a long list of programs like in the past. There is still a desktop which you can have program shortcuts as usual, but I like using the Live Tiles for the most part. The mail and calendar apps that come with Windows 8 are pretty slick, but I already have calendar I use on my iPhone (Informant) and I can’t imagine using anything but Outlook for my email since I have so many different accounts. I also love that I can auto sync my photos directly from my iPhone to my PhotoStream, kind of like iCloud. There is so much I haven’t even begun to explore yet, like the games and tons of apps that are available for download. So far, so good and I love how fast my new laptop is running as well.

I always mixed emotions when getting a new laptop. While I love the speed and freshness of the whole thing, it takes me forever to get all my documents and programs moved over. We ended up purchasing the new version of Act for our work database and it functions pretty quickly as well. It took me awhile to get through this list…
To do list....ugh
