Why I ended up not cooking on Thanksgiving

kcisken
A couple of weeks ago my hubby started having some really bad stomach pains. Of course this had to happen the same night as our football banquet. He was able to push through the pain and last through the banquet, but immediately as it was over we headed over to the Emergency Room. They ran a few tests, but couldn’t come up with anything concrete. He was sent home with some meds and he actually started feeling better for a few days.

Then the morning before Thanksgiving he had even worse pains and we headed back to the ER. This time they did a CT scan and found the culprit. Ken was diagnosed with diverticulitis and a perforated bowel. At first we thought he was going to have to be rushed into surgery and I was a complete wreck. Just not what you want to hear even if it is the best course of action. Luckily after several physicians came and asked him the same questions over and over again they finally decided that several days in the hospital on a restricted diet and a high dosage of antibiotics would do the trick.

Thanksgiving was spent with Ken in the hospital sipping liquids. The kids and I visited him before heading over to my parents for dinner. The only humor of the situation was when Ken said he got me out of cooking Thanksgiving dinner. It wouldn’t have been the same without him there. Also I had spent the entire day before Thanksgiving at the hospital so the last thing I wanted to do was wake up and stuff a turkey. Besides Ken is always the one to make the yummy dressing!

Thankfully he is now home and feeling better. He is still watching what he eats and taking antibiotics multiple times a day. I guess it’s pretty much trial and error when you have diverticulitis as to what will cause a flare up. I’m just happy he is home and life is back to normal.

School Skipper

Did I ever tell the story of the day I got caught skipping school? I was thinking about this the other day because of how different kids have it now compared to back when I was in high school. Nowadays if your teen has a cell phone it’s pretty easy to track where they are. With online grades and attendance records I can see immediately if my son doesn’t attend a class. It would be pretty hard for him to skip school without getting caught.

I’ll never forget the day I was caught by my father. I was skipping school with Andrew’s dad and we were heading to breakfast one morning. As we were sitting at a light, getting ready to turn left, we both noticed my dad’s car drive by. Andrew’s dad drove a bright red El Camino which was a rare car, so you couldn’t miss it. As soon as we seen my dad’s car we high tailed it back to school. We were walking as fast as we could from the parking lot to try and get into the school building without getting caught. Just as we were about to walk into the school my dad pulled up in his van.

Right away my boyfriend says, “Just say we were going to pick up my friend.”
My dad yelled, “Come here!”
When I walked up to his car he asked, “Where do you think you were going?”
I replied, “To go pick up our friend Michelle.”
“Michelle who?”, he asked.
I said, “Michelle Tanner” (Yes, that was the youngest girl on Full House…apparently I was a big fan.)
My dad then yelled for my boyfriend to come here.
I turned to face him so I could mouth the word- MICHELLE – to him so he knew who our alibi was.
He walked up and my dad asked, “Where were you guys going?”
Boyfriend replied, “To pick up my friend”. (Ahhhh, we are SO GOOD!!)
My dad then asked, “Who?”
Boyfriend glances at me and quickly says, “Bob.”
“Get your ass in to school.” My dad said and then off he went.

Dang!!! So close! But duh, like come on…how stupid were we?
So moral of the story is when you think you are gonna pull something off like that get all the fine details straight before you try and talk your way out of it.

Oh and I only got grounded for a week for that little stunt. I wasn’t a big school skipper, but we did learn to not drive around on the main roads from there on out.

Today’s happenings

Not much to blog about today. Just a bunch of busy work…
Getting the banquet gifts together for the football team
Organizing my desk – why is it always so messy on Mondays?
Took Andrew to practice maneuver ability and parallel parking since he is taking his driving test Saturday? HOLD ME!!
Lots of laundry – another reason to hate Mondays
Trying to track down an Up by Jawbone wristband with no luck – Had to order one.
And keeping the dogs separated because they have been fighting like sisters…oh wait they are sisters – Ken called this apartment living. I like to call it luxury suites. Pippa is in Suite 201, Daisy, Suite 101.

No more pigskin

Today was our last day of football! Woo Hoo! Of course we still have uniform turn-ins for two days and a banquet to attend too. We are almost finished! We survived our first year of running this team and we are still married at the end of it. Halleluiah! Actually it wasn’t all that bad. Getting people to volunteer is the worst part of it all. I don’t get some of these parents who want to just drop their kid off at stuff and not have to put out any extra time to make the league run smoothly. Oh well, to each their own right?
Last day of football! Woo Hoo!

I got some new Xbox360 headphones!! All ready for MW3 on Tuesday. I have so much to do this week. What a terrible week for a new game to come out. I am going to be doing some major multitasking tomorrow so I can be all ready for the game on Tuesday. I wonder how many other 39 year old moms with 4 kids are as excited about MW3 as me?

November is…

November is the month of exciting things!!

November 6th – The UP by Jawbone wristband goes on sale. I am all for any new type of electronic gadget and one that can sync with my iPhone and tell me when it’s time to get off my rear and go do something, sounds perfect to me. I’ll share all the details with you once I get one next week. I love new toys!

November 8th – Just in time for the approaching winter weather! Ken and I have already pre-ordered our Elite copies. We will get all the new maps and some extra downloadable content for no extra cost. Well really you pay for it up front, but supposedly it’s cheaper this way. I will be taking the 8th off work and getting my game on!

November 18th – I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for this movie. The other day I read that the highly anticipated sex scene was reshot due to it exceeding the guidelines for a PG-13 movie. I can’t believe that, I mean come on…like the directors didn’t know this when they were filming it. I am trying really really hard to stop analyzing how far into the book will the first movie go. My guess is right before Bella gives birth. Which would also be right before Bella turns into a vampire. What do you think? I can’t believe we will have to wait an entire year to see part 2. Then again once it’s over what will I daydream about?

Homecoming

It’s hard enough to believe that my oldest son just turned 16…let alone swallow the idea of him attending school dances with a date. I swear I can still remember my own awkward moments of having my date pick me up and waddling around on 3 inch heels and smashing down my dress hoop skirt as I got in the car. Remember those things? Despite my nostalgia, it’s pretty clear it’s 2011 and not 1990. For one the dresses are much much shorter now. And two everyone has long flat bangs. Back then it was all about poof of your dress and the height of your bangs.

This was Andrew and Ali’s first dance together. They are adorable as a couple I must say so myself. Andrew makes me so proud in moments like this. He always has these proper old fashioned ways of doing things. He had to meet Ali’s parents first before he asked her to the dance. He also made sure that both myself and Ken and his dad met her as well before the big night. He said that he didn’t want her to be nervous about meeting us for the first time the same day as the dance. He is such a gentleman. Okay, now I am probably just embarrassing him like crazy.

Now for the photos…

Andrew made this one on his phone.

Sixteen

Andrew - 16 years

My dad has always said that Andrew is a special kid and I wholeheartedly agree. I couldn’t be more proud of the young man he has become. He continues to amaze me and I couldn’t ask for anything more in a son. Well except for growing up so fast…he’s making me feel old!

My parents got Andrew some fishing equipment. We got him an iPhone and I was even kind enough to give him my unlimited data plan since Verizon isn’t giving out any new smartphone owners unlimited plans anymore. He also got a bunch of money which I have no idea what he is going to spend that on.

To celebrate his birthday with friends we took him and his buddies to play paintball. After begging and pleading for him to have a big 16th Birthday Bash, he finally compromised and agreed to my idea of playing paintball. He has always been one of those kids who doesn’t like people making a big fuss over things. They all had a blast at paintball and some walked away with battle scars. I just watched, which I am glad I didn’t give it a try after seeing some of the welts they received.

Geez, when did they all get so tall?

Fall moments to remember

It’s hard to believe the kids have been back in school for two months already. Times flies when you are having fun, right?! Now that football is coming to an end we actually have some spare time available to enjoy some personal hobbies, such has spending some time on our family blog. How do you like the new header? I just fell in love with the heart/nest graphic and had to do something with it.

Here’s some photos from the past couple of months.

Did I tell ya I turned 29 last month?? Okay fine, 39…but who’s counting. Ken allows me to be whatever age I want, see even my cake says so. (Ya, hubby doesn’t take real good photos on the fly.)
Forever 29th!!! (really 39th, but hubby loves me that much)

My kids can’t ever keep their bedrooms clean. Sometimes I just want to say “Who cares!” and just keep their doors shut all the time. Do you make your kids keep their rooms tidy? I have to say I like Karli’s room the best. For one it’s PINK and two she loves to share photos and have people leave her sweet messages on her board. Hmmm, sounds familiar.
Brings back memories of my childhood...hanging new pictures all the time.

Crazy Hair Day!!

Andrew took a Parenting class this year and it was his turn to take care of a fake baby for the weekend. We were cracking up laughing that the baby started crying right as his dad picked him up for the weekend. It was all smiles from this grandma and grandpa! Andrew had a rough weekend, but he survived. Let’s hope I am not a grandma for another 10 years or so.
Andrew is a dad this weekend for parenting class ;)

He got a Mexican baby since it most closely resembled his dark complexion. We have no Mexican in our bloodlines, just a little Indian. Andrew named his baby Carlos!
Update: He got his grade for the taking care of the baby today- he got a 105%. Not sure how he got the extra credit, but sounds like he will be a great parent. HAHAHA, if only it were that easy. Too bad the baby didn’t poop up it’s back while sitting in the car seat or spit up on all over itself a few times. :0
Meet my grandson...Carlos. He's Mexican. I guess this was the closest to Andrew's s complexion, LOL.
